Client: A State Run Power Utility of Delhi
Objective: Finding optimal location for Ring Main Unit of its distribution districts
Duration: 2 months
Study:
Owing to techno-commercial constraints, RMU location is an important aspect in the pursuit of reliable power supply. RMUs are essential for enhancing the system reliability by reducing the ENS (Energy Not Served) values. The other major assistance that they provide is in fault isolation and power restoration to affected locations. In the absence of reliability data, it is not possible to calculate the reliability indices. So the scenarios for before and after RMU placements were compared by creating outages in the section and further evaluating the power that could not be served because of outages in the network. The proposed locations for RMUs were found using CYMDIST software tool and corresponding outages were evaluated.
Approach:
1. System outages were calculated for the existing network. And value of KW power not served was observed.
2. Possibility of backups and switching locations were found using load flow report of the network.
ENS values for Forced System outages were calculated for the existing network. More frequently operating switching devices are declared to be the best location to put a RMU.
Conclusion:
New RMUs were proposed, outages were created and value of power KW not served was evaluated for different scenarios.
A better approach towards the same type of scenario was adopted during the DMS project of the same client, which we did as independent consultants. Here we evaluated the reliability parameters – this being a better approach as it considers reliability of the system as well.
